Upper Back Pain During Breathing — Should I Be Worried?

Upper back discomfort during breathing may indicate various conditions, including infections, trauma, or cardiac issues. Pain during inhalation may involuntarily cause a person to take short breaths, which can disrupt oxygen supply.

Possible Causes

  • Pleurisy — inflammation of the tissue covering the lungs, causing chest and back pain during breathing, along with fatigue and fever
  • Strained muscles — a common cause that worsens with breathing; treatable with rest, NSAIDs, and ice therapy
  • Vertebra fracture — results from serious trauma, more common in patients with osteoporosis; managed through physiotherapy and pain relief
  • Panic disorder — anxiety episodes that produce breathing difficulties and back pain, addressed through psychotherapy and medication
  • Scoliosis — a sideways spinal curvature causing pain and breathing difficulties, managed with braces and exercises
  • Arrhythmia or heart attack — cardiac conditions presenting with chest/back pain, dizziness, and breathing issues
